Looking like a designer...

My route to becoming a member of the video game industry has been a winding one.

I started as a mechanical engineer - a brain geared for physics and mathematics. But after a year in undergrad, I discovered a new subject that I enjoyed learning about: programming.

I still have an innate curiosity about the physical world around me, but my passions led me elsewhere. A switch in major had me coding, but not as a software engineer. Georgia Tech offers a program known as Computational Media where an opportunity to start dipping my toes into development presented itself.

My undergrad provided a great foundation, but wasn't enough. I still felt lacking in my field where people have programmed for twice as long as I had. The next step was The Centre for Digital Media. It took me international, far from home, and working with teams of such high caliber.

Starting off, I hoped to experiment more in the design side. Unfortunately, my cohort is short on developers and I fell back into my role as a programmer. Not to say my skills in Unity programming did not significantly improve during my time in Vancouver, it just did not quite fill that passion.

Now I'm determined though. Programming has been a great door leading into the world of game development - but it's time to follow my creative, inspired side.

Many thanks to Quinn Brander (check him out here) for his help in advising me to start looking like a game designer!
